KOHLER, William Curtis M.D., age 72, died at home in Brooksville on October 15, 2014. Formerly, he lived in Tallahassee, Florida and Fishtail, Montana.

Born in Wharton, N.J. to Walter and Elizabeth Kohler, Bill graduated from Oberlin College and The University of Florida College of Medicine. He served in the Air Force as a Major at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas. On September 1, 1962 he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Louise Bauman (they recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.)

Dr. Kohler will be especially remembered for his work in sleep medicine. He was involved with sleep medicine for over 40 years and was also Board Certified in Sleep Medicine as well as Pediatrics and Neurology. In 2009, at the World Congress on Sleep Medicine in Quebec, Canada, he presented some of his findings related to the successful treatment of somnambulism. This past August he was among the speakers at "Current Concepts in Sleep Medicine, 2014," the annual conference on sleep held in St. Petersburg. He was formerly a partner in the Tallahassee Neurological Clinic for 18 years. Later, he founded the Florida Sleep Institute in Spring Hill, Florida and was instrumental in certifying other sleep labs around the country.

Dr. Kohler's life-long interest in the field of sleep medicine also prompted him to research numerous ways in which sleep disorders can be treated successfully. Shortly before his death, he completed a manuscript currently being readied for publication next spring by the Taylor & Francis Group.

While at Oberlin College he was a member of the noted Oberlin Choir that toured Russia at the request of the US State Department. He had a lifelong love of singing and shared it with his church family at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Spring Hill.

Bill was a man of unwavering faith. "Dr. Kohler" was widely regarded as the "sweetest man I ever met". He loved the Lord with all of his heart and loved his neighbors as himself. It was rare that he wasn't smiling or in a good mood regardless of the occasion. Through his faith and love of God he lived with an inner peace, comfort and confidence throughout his life despite turmoil and hardships.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara; son Jon and his wife Erica of Tallahassee and grandchildren Greyson and Ashton; daughter Kris Mitten and her husband John of Brooksville and grandchildren Briana, Vivian, John, William Spencer, Gwyneth, and Evelyn; and daughter Elizabeth of Brooksville.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 18. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church Building Fund, 13171 Tara Street, Spring Hill, Florida 34609.
